हस्तिनापुर के राजा शांतनु सत्यवती से विवाह करना चाहते थे।
King Shantanu of Hastinapura wished to marry Satyavati.
सत्यवती के पिता ने माँगा कि अगला राजा उसी का पुत्र बने।
Her father asked that only her son should become the next king.
शांतनु के बड़े पुत्र राजकुमार देवव्रत ने राजगद्दी छोड़ दी और कभी विवाह न करने की प्रतिज्ञा की।
Prince Devavrata, Shantanu's eldest son, gave up the throne and promised never to marry.
इस कठोर प्रतिज्ञा के कारण लोग उन्हें भीष्म कहने लगे।
Because of this hard vow, people called him Bhishma.
